BMI - A Body Composition Indicator

What is BMI?

You might have heard a lot of fitness enthusiasts, Doctors or Gym trainers talking about BMI

in every fitness related aspect. While being a scientific term, BMI is not a very hard concept

to understand.


So what exactly is BMI?

BMI means the Body Mass Index of a human body. It is the standardized ratio of weight to

height. It considers your height and weight and draws a relationship between them to measure the size of your body as compared to your height.


What is the purpose of calculating BMI?

BMI is the general indicator of your physical health. Calculation of BMI helps human being

understand the size of his/her body based on fat, whether he/she is under weight, average

weight, overweight or obese. Since the score is directly proportional to the amount of fat, a

high figure corresponds to a higher amount of fat.

A normal BMI for human body is considered to be between 18.5 and 25; a person with a BMI between 25 and 30 is considered overweight; and a person with a BMI over 30 is considered obese. A person is considered underweight if the BMI is less than 18.5.


Thus calculation of BMI is helpful for every individual in order to understand his/her body

little more accurately. Although BMI alone isn’t the complete test to identify any major

illness, but higher the BMI-higher is the risk of developing a range of conditions linked with

excess weight or obese condition, such as:

a) Diabetes

b) High Cholesterol

c) High Blood Pressure

d) Liver Diseases

e) Types of Cancer, etc


Hence we can say that BMI is like the initial scan of your body, which would indicate about any action to be taken based on initial calculations and work on your body to avoid diseases in the future.
